Prof. Dr Thomas C. Mettenleiter is President of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), Federal Research Institute of Animal Health on the island of Riems near Greifswald, formerly the Federal Research Institute of Animal Viral Diseases. Mettenletier studied biology at Tübingen and obtained a PhD there in genetics (1985). After a research visit to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, USA, he worked until 1993 at the Institute of Vaccines at the Federal Research Institute of Animal Viral Diseases in Tübingen. He was awarded his postdoctoral qualification in 1990. In 2007 Mettenleiter received an honorary doctorate from Hanover Veterinary College for his achievements in combating animal epidemics caused by the herpes virus. His research findings have provided the basis for an understanding of herpes viruses. |
