Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Joachim von Braun

tl_files/Bilder - Rat/braun.jpg Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Joachim von Braun, until December 2009  Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute, USA, is Director of the Department of Economic and Technological Change at the Center for Development Research (ZEF) in Bonn.

From 1970 to 1975 he studied agricultural sciences at Bonn University. In Göttingen he obtained a PhD in agricultural labour markets and also his postdoctoral qualification in agricultural economics with a thesis on food security in developing countries. After several research visits to Egypt, Africa, Russia and China he was appointed Director of the Centre for Development Research (ZEF) at Bonn University. From 2002 to 2009 Prof. von Braun has headed the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington DC – one of the leading research institutions in the field of global food policy, with around 300 members of staff.

Joachim von Braun is a member of the North Rhine–Westphalian Academy of Sciences, the international Advisory Board of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and a Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). From 2000 to 2003 he was also President of the International Union of Agricultural Economists. He was a speaker at the Rio Conference in 1992, the World Food Summit in 1996, and at a number of ‘World Economic Forums’ in Davos.

In 2009 von Braun has headed the Strategic Commission of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), a research association of 15 international institutes. His academic research focuses on questions of agriculture, trade, nutrition, research and technology policy, and information and communication technology for economic development.
