A restrained use of natural resources demands the development of efficient, 1ow-emission and energy-saving processes. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr Treffenfeldt, member of the BioEconomyCouncil, the work group will draw up recommendations in the field of industrial biotechnology. Industrial biotechnology, also known as ‘white’ biotechnology, uses various processes such as fermentation technology, biocatalysis, and synthetic biology for the sustainable production of materials or energy. Building on the strengths of industrial biotechnology in Germany, the biotechnology work group aims to support further development so as to consolidate industrial biotechnology as an important pillar of the economy and to help it achieve an advantageous competitive position on the world market.

The biotechnology work group’s agenda covers the following subjects:

  • The interlinking of science, business, politics and society
  • Structures for research, technological development, and the introduction of products and processes into the market
  • The combination of technological and socio-economic research topics (including considerations of sustainability)
  • Highlighting efficiency and synergy potentials beyond the current areas of application.
  • Development of international solutions

The work group consists of BioEconomyCouncil members and outside experts from science and business.
