Dr. Christian Patermann

Dr. Christian Patermann Dr Christian Patermann is an advisor on knowledge-based bio-economy to the Land government of North Rhine–Westphalia.

In 1996 he was appointed European Commission Director (from 2004 Programme Director) for ‘Biotechnologies, Agriculture and Food’ in the Directorate General for Research in Brussels. He studied law, economics and modern languages, and obtained a PhD in law in 1969. Then he worked in a number of posts in Federal Ministries, as well as in the German embassy in Washington DC. As an expert for science, research and education he worked for a variety of German and international organisations.

On the international stage, Christian Patermann was Vice-President of the Steering Committee IGFA (International Group of Funding Agencies in Global Change) and member of the Scientific Committee. Later, as Programme Director of the Directorate General for Research in the European Commission in Brussels, he developed the concept of ‘knowledge-based bio-economy’ within the largest international research programme in the world (the EU’s 7th Framework Programme). He was also Chairman of the oldest European committee involving the European Parliament, Council and Commission, the so-called Standing Committee on Agricultural Research, SCAR.
