Dr. Claus Gerhard Bannick

Dr Claus Gerhard Bannick studied agricultural sciences in Göttingen, specialising in soil sciences, and obtained a PhD in microbiology and humins in composting. He then worked at the Institute of Water, Soil and Air Hygiene at the Federal Health Agency, before moving to the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). From 2001 to 2003 he was head of the section for the ‘disposal of hazardous waste’ in the ‘Waste’ department, and from 2003 to 2006 he headed the section for ‘basic issues of soil protection’ and also ran the ‘Soil’ department. From 2004 to 2006 he was Director of the Federal Environment Agency’s Commission on Soil Protection. In 2007 he again became head of section in the ‘Sewage and waste management’ department at UBA.

Besides these main jobs Claus Bernhard Bannick was also Director of the Federal Soil Association from 1995 to 2005. He is also involved in a number of national and European committees, for example as the head of the ‘Environment’ section in the hydrosciences standards committee at DIN. Dr Bannick is co-publisher of the journal Bodenschutz (soil protection). He is currently on secondment from UBA, working in the executive division of the German Geo-research Centre in Potsdam. In this function he has been charged with heading the administrative offices of the Council.
