Food, Feed, Fibre and Fuel: bio-economy is a novel approach towards the use of natural resources. The BioÖkonomieRat (BioEconomyCouncill) is the independent advisory body to the German government for all matters relating to bio-economy. The Council is made up of experts from university and non-university research institutes, the federal government’s own departmental research, and from research in the private sector.

The Council’s administrative office is at the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), and it is supported by both the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV).

The BMBF specialist forum ‘Plant research, climate, sustainability’, hosted by the German plant genome programme, GABI, and the BioEconomyCouncil, has highlighted the key role of thoroughgoing plant research as a means of adapting to climate change. The growing demand for food, raw materials and renewable energy is presenting plant research and its related disciplines with new challenges, the forum said.

BioEconomyCouncil appoints two new members

The Bio-economy Research and Technology Council has been bolstered by the appointment of two new members. Dr Stefan Marcinowski (BASF SE) and Dr Holger Zinke (Brain AG) will henceforth assist the Council’s work, particularly in the area of plant research and bio-technology.

Expertise of BioEconomyCouncil strengthened by addition of five new members

Berlin, 29/10/2009. The Bio-economy Research and Technology Council, whose headquarters is at acatech, has strengthened its expertise with the addition of five new members. In a session on 19/10/2009, the executive committee of the German Academy of Science and Engineering appointed four men and one woman to the council. The rationale behind this move was that the new Council members will expand the range of research areas relevant to the bio-economy, with the inclusion of renowned researchers from the fields of food research, agricultural economics, animal health research, chemistry and industrial microbiology.

BioEconomyCouncil delivers its first policy recommendations
